Programme Overview

This one day program supports participants to communicate in a highly impactful and influential way.  A commonly held misconception is that the key to influencing another is through persuasive communication. The truth is in fact quite different. The secret to maximizing your influence in key negotiations and critical conversations is Active Listening and this one day program leads participants through the process of how to combine Active Listening and Assertive Communications to maximize their influence when communicating. This program proceeds to demonstrate how participants can then combine these skills to work through conflict situations and to arrive at collaborative solutions which Stephen Covey refers to as ‘The Third Alternative’. The Third Alternative is a collaborative solution to a conflict this is better than either of the original parties were initially proposing.  Time is also provided during this one day program for participants to practice these new highly effective communicating, influencing and conflict resolution skills.


Programme Objectives

The Program Objectives are as follows:


  1. Develop the skills of ‘Communicating to Influence’
  2. Change the perception of conflict from potentially destructive to a positive technique that fuels the energetic exchange of ideas
  3. Build the skills of mature dialogue and debate
  4. Improve the timeliness of decision making through conflict resolution
  5. Reach better solutions through collaboration and idea exchange
  6. Equip leaders with skills and techniques that are essential for success in the interdependent, organizations of today

Any Leader, Manager or Individual within an Organization who requires support / training to communicate with greater influence.

Programme Content

9.00 am to 9.45 am:     Setting our Conversations up for lasting Influence      

Speaking from a place of personal power is a core competency of highly influential communicators. Based on a strong theoretical foundation of Transactional Analysis, this opening segment explores the importance of always conducting our important conversations, communications and professional presentations from a place of solid personal power. The limitations of speaking from either Positional or Relational power will also be examined. Models such as the ‘Drama Triangle’ and theories such as the ‘Stimulus – Response Theory’ are offered as supports to ensure that our communications are always of a highly influential nature.

9.45 am to 10.30 am:    Active Listening – The Key to influencing others

It is easy to accept the common belief that the key to influencing another in critical negotiations is through persuasive communication. In fact, I have come to believe that the opposite is true. If you really need to get your message across to another then the universal principle that needs to be applied is “seek first to understand, and then to be understood” and the competency needed to truly understanding another is Active Listening. The good news is that the skill of active listening can be developed, and it needs to begin with the realization that what often passes as active listening could be more accurately described, at worst as advice giving, and at best as  low quality listening. In this ‘Communicating to Influence’ program, a highly effective active listening process will be presented that is at the heart of many professions such as Coaching and Mediation.

10.30 am to 10.45 am:              Coffee Break

10.45 am to 12.30 pm:  Direct Communication – Saying what needs to be said ... Respectfully.           

Many of us struggle to say what really needs to be said out of fear of saying the wrong thing or fear of saying something foolish or fear of upsetting the other party. There is a real skill in being able to hold

direct and assertive conversations, especially when there’s a lot at stake, such as in significant personal or professional relationships. In this segment of the program, we develop the skill of assertiveness while avoiding the traps of passive, passive-aggressive and aggressive communication.

12.30 pm to 1.45 pm                Lunch


1.45 pm to 3.00 pm      Creating Win: Win Synergistic Solutions.... How to communicate to ensure that everybody wins!

Win: Win Synergistic solutions are the most sought after outcome from all important conversations. This segment of the program will demonstrate how combining the skills of Active Listening and Direct Communications can always lead to outcomes that exceed the initial expectations of either party. Often we approach critical discussions with a Win: Lose mindset on the basis that for me to win, you need to lose, which ultimately results in a lose: lose situation for all involved. Drawing from the rich research of Stephen Covey and his work on ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ we discuss the mindset, the process and the skills needed to strive for a solution to challenging conversations that works for all parties.

3.00 pm to 3.15 pm                  Coffee Break

3.15 pm to 5.00 pm      Practice, Practice, Practice

In the final part of this workshop, participants will get an opportunity to practice and apply this alternative and highly effective approach to influential communication. This process of communicating to influence will be applied to real scenarios taken from the participants personal or professional lives. It is through this practice that participants get real experiential evidence of the power of this process when it comes to maximizing their influence in important negotiations.

Trainer Name and Bio

Trainer Bio:  JJ O Riordan is an experienced Program Facilitator, Executive Coach and Mentor with over twenty years of management and leadership experience in Analog Devices.  He has coached many managers, leaders and high potential employees in some of the most respected organizations in Ireland. His coaching style has been described as energetic, engaging and challenging. The work he undertook to create a coaching culture within Analog Devices was published in the ‘Coaching World’ magazine, which is the global publication of the world’s largest professional coaching body – The International Coach Federation (I.C.F.).  He has also mentored trainee coaches in Ireland and the UK. In his coaching practice, JJ focuses exclusively on working with senior leaders, managers and high potential employees within organizations. He brings a unique coaching presence to his organizational clients which can be largely attributed to his unique career path to date. He has a first class honours degree in engineering from the University of Limerick, a Masters in Computer Systems, a B.SC.  Degree in Psychotherapy from Middlesex University and an ICF accredited Diploma in Executive Coaching,

As a program facilitator, JJ has delivered organizational development programs many times in Europe, the US and in Asia. His programs are based on his own personal and professional experience and although based on very solid theoretical models, they tend to be very practical and focused on making positive and measurable improvements .He has led many change management programs within multinational environments, which has resulted in increased competitiveness as well as the creation of higher value employment opportunities.
