Overview

This programme develops and refines participants’ report writing skills and enables them to communicate more effectively with their readers.

Target Audience

This is an extremely practical and interactive training programme. It is aimed at those who are new to technical report writing and those who wish to upgrade and refine their skills.

Objectives

 Draft and edit reports with greater purpose
 Approach report writing in a systematic manner
 Organise information gathering in a time-efficient and logical manner
 Structure documents using a hassle-free scripting process
 Plan the report to maximise impact and advertise the writer’s professionalism
 Prepare reports to withstand hostile readings
Programme Content

 Identifying the principles of effective report writing
 Analysing sample reports
 Profiling the target readerships
 Planning and clarifying the purpose
 Preparing the process: the writer, the reader and the information
 Time managing the reporting process
 Selecting relevant information
 Deciding on layout and the most effective use of each report section
 Differentiating between fact, analysis and opinion
 Developing a reader-friendly writing style
 Writing clear, concise sentences
 Concluding and recommending within the agreed remit
Participants should, if possible, bring sample reports they have written to the training programme.

 

Trainer Profile, Qualifications & Relevant Experience

Tiernan Ivory is a communication consultant with over fifteen years’ training and coaching experience. He has worked extensively with staff from many of Ireland’s leading and largest organisations, and has an MA in English from University College Dublin. Prior to his university studies, he trained as a chartered accountant. He holds a Certificate in Training & Continuing Education from NUI Maynooth.
