The TWI (Training Within Industry) Programs contain learning disciplines and problem solving tools that were collected and organized over 70 years ago. At that time and today also, they are often promoted as 10-hour training programs; and indeed, thats what they are. However, just as a one-hour golf lesson requires additional time and effort in order for it to be worthwhile, the TWI 10-hour programs also require additional time and effort to be useful. The time and effort are well spent however, because the TWI programs change how employees think about their jobs. The programs enable standard work and they help spark creativity in employees. These benefits alone make them not only desirable but also required for success.
Having said that however, it still takes effort and discipline to both initiate and sustain the programs. Consider changing the language you use in your organization. Say, for example, that everyone in your organization speaks and writes in English and the decision has been made that everyone will now speak and write in Swahili. There are many similarities between this scenario and implementing TWI programs. The result in both cases should be that the organizations culture has changed. That is, the way employees behave and approach their work will have changed. Also, its important that all employees accept and use the change in their work in order to make it as successful as it can be. The change cant be relegated to a certain few employees or departments, since any successful department is dependent on all others. In addition to having everyone participate, it must have management approval and be part of the overall company strategy. Donald A. Dinero, PE, CPIM has more than forty years of experience designing and implementing manufacturing methods and processes and is the principal of The TWI Learning Partnership. He has addressed problems in all aspects of operations including but not limited to change management, personnel, labor unions, production systems, and production control. His BS degree in Mechanical Engineering is from the University of Rochester and his MBA and MS (Career and Human Resource Development) degrees are from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He received his Professional Engineering license (NYS) in 1983 and his Certification in Production and Inventory Control from APICS in 1986.
In 2002, Don learned about TWI (Training Within Industry) and its reemergence that was beginning in the U.S. He became certified as a TWI trainer in the three J courses and began to study all the material he could find on the subject. His studies and talks on TWI culminated in the book Training Within Industry: The Foundation of Lean, published by Productivity Press. As he continued implementing Lean concepts, he began to realize that the Lean movement is hindered by its omission of TWI training. TWI offers fundamental skills training which helps to stabilize an organization, preparing it to seriously begin its Lean journey. In order to assist in stabilizing organizations and thus assist in the acceptance of Lean, Don is concentrating his efforts on spreading the word of TWI. He delivers training in all three of the J programs as well as Program Development. In keeping with the multiplier effect cited by the Training Within Industry Service, he also offers Train The Trainer sessions for the three J programs. This allows an organizations employees to independently deliver the training.
