Special Purpose Award (Level 8, 30 Credits)

The purpose of this program is to educate front line employability professionals to be more effective in their roles.

This program addresses a wide range of knowledge & skills, many of which are applicable to roles in a variety of human, social and business services.  Graduates will be equipped with a "toolkit" that will strengthen their professional practice.

The role of the employability practitioner is now much more focused on sustainable employment outcomes than ever before and this brings with it a need for a different set of competencies and knowledge requirements.


There is a strong emphasis on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which means that it is ideal for many people currently working in the Employability Sector who want to progress in this field.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Tools and techniques of Employability Services underpinned by understanding of elements, processes, core professional activities, and business excellence essentials necessary for an effective integrated employment support process
  • Understand employability services, including insights from existing domains (HRM, Social Work, Business Consulting etc.) as well as exploring specialised areas into a fresh body of knowledge.
  • Demonstrate mastery of a range of core professional activities carried out by Employability Service Practitioners, including: change management, consulting, coaching, capability building, crisis and conflict management, and career advice.
  • Exercise appropriate judgement in a number of complex planning, design, technical and/or management functions related to products, services, operations or processes, including resourcing.
  • Advanced skills to conduct research or advanced technical or professional activity, accepting accountability for all relate decision making; transfer and apply diagnostic and creative skills in a range of contexts.
  • Demonstrate independent and supervised skills required to facilitate individual and group employment interventions.
  • Continuous Professional Development activities - including learning from experience, reflective practice and the rapid assimilation of skills and insights from different learning contexts.
  • Understand client, organisational and enterprise needs and be able to use program insights to deliver a high level of thoughtful service to all stakeholders.
  • The project in the final module is  - Conduct an extensive critical analysis of an organisation that you are familiar with -  This analysis will form the basis of the design of a performance improvement project for the identified service.

Program Assessment:  A combination of project examination, case study, presentation and role play will be used

Delivery is through interactive seminars with a mix of activities including mini-lectures, case-studies, group exercises, role-plays, and other practical tasks. Learners are encouraged to contribute to the learning process by sharing their experiences and personal insights.

Candidates are provided with hypothetical "case files" for client job-seekers and potential employers.

Reading List & Other Resources - Learners will be provided with a range of hard and soft-copy resources. In addition, additional reading material will be provided via the NCI Electronic Library.
