Lean Sigma Black Belt


Programme Overview

A certified Lean Sigma Black Belt is a professional who is an expert in Lean and Six Sigma philosophies and principles, including supporting systems and tools. A Black Belt should demonstrate team leadership, understand team dynamics and assign team member roles and responsibilities. Black Belts have a thorough understanding of all aspects of the DMAIC model in accordance with Lean Sigma principles.

They have a thorough knowledge of Lean enterprise concepts, are able to identify non-value added elements and activities and are able to use specific tools. The course draws both the basic problem solving tools and advanced statistical principles including DOE (Design of Experiments) and SPC (Statistical Process Control).

Awarding Body

CIT: Thirty credits at Level 8 on the National Framework Qualifications.

•        At the end of this programme participants will be enabled to:

–       Plan and execute plant wide improvement activity

–       Mentor and co-ordinate multiple cross-functional team through the completion of successful projects

–       Liaise with Management and Customers on quantifying business and financial benefits for the organisation and the customer

Target Audience

Entry Requirements

A demonstration of several years work experience in a technical role in manufacturing or a service industry is required.  Experience in Lean six sigma principles is desirable.

Project Mentoring and Online Support

A work-based project is undertaken as part of the course. Students will receive project support and mentoring from their tutors. Student projects can deliver savings of more than €100,000 per project.  As part of the course online support data is provided for all students.




Trainer Profile Qualification & Relevant Experience

All core lecturers on the course are practitioners in Lean Sigma techniques and have each over 20 years experience in industry and are Black belt or Master Black Belt equivalent.  On the statistics side the lecturer is a lead lecturer in the CIT Math Department with significant experience in mentoring ASQ course maths for over fifteen years.


The lead lecturers also hold Certificates in Training and Continuing Education from NUI Maynooth.
